Two young pianists from California claimed first place in their divisions in the 2024 Thousand Islands International Piano Competition for Young People, held in Cape Vincent September 6-8. Presented by the Cape Vincent Arts Council, the competition took place at Maple Grove Estate and was free and open to the public.
This year, fifteen pianists competed for cash prizes in three rounds of competition. They performed music by Chopin, J.S. Bach, and other classical composers and were judged by a panel of professional pianists/music educators against a professional-artistic standard. In addition to judges' prizes, audience members could vote for their favorite performer in each division.
Winners were as follows:
Junior Division (high school age and younger) Wilson Liu, 10, Glendora, CA: First Place and Audience Prize Claire Li, 10, Fort Lee, NJ: Second Place Mayu Kanai, 15, New York City: Third Place (tie) Silvia Nicholson, 16, New York City: Third Place (tie) Leping Ho, 11, Markham, Ontario, Canada: Honorable Mention Olivia Li, 8, Fort Lee, NJ: Audience Prize
Senior Division (high school graduates up to age 26) Xiaolong Liu, 24, San Gabriel, CA: First Place and Audience Prize Hanxiao Lai, 25, Shenzhen, Guangdong, China: Second Place Ruoyu Ni, 19, Shanghai, China: Third Place Meihui An, 22, Brookline, MA: Honorable Mention Benjamin Daly, 25, Syracuse, NY: Audience Prize
